Preparing for Coaching
Coaching will challenge you — and that’s exactly what makes it transformative. There will likely be moments when you feel fear or shame. This can happen when you make a mistake, when we’re challenging your beliefs, or the discussion ventures into uncomfortable topics. In these moments, lots of people feel the impulse to disengage—to blame, disappear, defend, or find some other tactic to avoid those feelings.
You might have noticed some of these impulses in yourself! But that’s okay. It’s not the patterns themselves that will stop you from making progress. It’s the unwillingness to notice them, name them, and call out their influence. The good news is: when you acknowledge these tendencies up front, we can both be aware of them, and work through them together when they come up. In fact, we can move as gently and gradually as you need to. And that conscious, gradual approach is exactly what has made my most successful clients get breakthrough results.
The amazing thing is that you’re showing courage when you stay present even though you want to shut down, stay curious even though your ego feels threatened, or speak honestly even though you feel exposed. That’s what makes you a courageous client—not being perfect, but being honest and sincere. And that is something you can do.
The questions below are meant to help you anticipate your reactions you might have during challenging moments, so that we can prepare to work through them and succeed.
Just be honest. And rest assured that the answers you provide here will not be used against you. They’ll be used for you.
