The Coaching Process

According to Dual Processing Theory, our minds operate on two levels: automatic and reflective. The automatic system handles automatic, instinctive decisions—our habits, impulses, and gut reactions. This system allows us to automative useful behaviors. The only problem is that sometimes we automate behaviors that aren’t healthy or aligned with our values. On the other hand, the reflective system gives us the ability to pause, question, and choose our actions intentionally. This system also makes it possible to consciously rewire our brains, change, and grow as a person.

One of the most powerful ways to engage your reflective mind is through writing. The process of writing, even when the grammar or spelling is imperfect, challenges you to clarify, organize, and make sense of your own thoughts. Especially when you write answers to self-defining questions about your values, it creates a strong foundation to for conscious living. Once you make a commitment to your values—especially in writing—you will feel a strong need to either be consistent or at least appear consistent with that commitment.

One-on-one coaching will bring your reflective thinking to another level. A lot of times we have buried emotions, fears, and attachments that interfere with making healthy and aligned choices. Having a confidential, non-judgmental space helps you to get things off your chest. It’s a place where you can vent, explore, and get empathetic feedback and guidance.
